This is the only known draft of The Dial Press’s cover of Eagle. It’s a large poster, mounted on foamcore. Notice that the font is different than in the final version, and the words “A Novel” were dropped as well. Pauline’s name was also moved to the middle of the text area, at the top.
When the novel was released Dial sent the cover draft as a poster to Pauline, who signed it and gave it to a friend. Her signature is visible in the ampersand. It was kept in storage for many years and recently returned to Pauline in conjunction with the Dillon covers poster project.
The first four covers of Pauline’s novels were created by Leo and Diane Dillon. Sadly, Leo passed away in 2012, but Diane and Pauline have agreed to make these covers available as posters and prints. Details are at this page.
