This is the only known draft of The Dial Press’s cover of Eagle. It’s a large poster, mounted on foamcore. Notice that the font is different than in the final version, and the words “A Novel” were dropped as well. Pauline’s name was also moved to the middle of the text area, at the top.
When the novel was released Dial sent the cover draft as a poster to Pauline, who signed it and gave it to a friend. Her signature is visible in the ampersand.
It was given pride of place for some years, but Pauline’s friend passed away and the poster found its way into an adjacent garage for a couple of decades. It was found and returned to Pauline in conjunction with the Dillon covers poster project.
